Artist Statement

From the early morning sunrise in the Southern France to the late afternoon glow in a small fishing village in northern Maine, it’s all about the light. I find myself waiting for that precise moment that makes my photographs come alive and pulls the viewer into the scene.

I attended Brooks Institute of Photography in the 1970’s and obtained a degree in Industrial and Scientific Photography. Since graduation I have made my living first as a medical photographer and later in portraiture. I sold landscape images in the U.S. and over 20 countries through Westlight and Corbis stock agencies. For 30 years I used 4x5 and 2 1/4 cameras in my photography. In 2004 I added Canon digital cameras. I make this choice due to there flexibility and quality.. I donated my traditional darkroom to the local university and now print using photoshop and an Epson 9890 ink jet printer. I stretch my canvas and either gallery wrap or frame my work.

Using techniques learned over 30 years of large format landscape photography I am able to capture the subtle details of each scene with stunning clarity and color. Through experimentation, I have developed a personal style which emphasizes the 'Quality of Light.' What I once thought was a highly manipulated enlarger printed photograph I now realize was only the beginning. My digital imaging darkroom puts me in total control of my photographs. I now control color, contrast, and density of an image down to the smallest details. Using darkroom/ digital techniques I add shadow and light, sharpen or blur, fine tune color, expand the tonal range and remove distracting elements. Using these techniques I direct the eye of the viewer within my photographs.

I have chosen Epson exhibition natural canvas along with long lasting ultrachrome pigmented inks that will outlive traditional prints by decades.
